The nine provinces and the number of casinos each are allowed follows: Gauteng (6), North West (5), Northern (3), Mpumalanga (4), KwaZulu-Natal (5), Free State (4), Western Cape (5), Eastern Cape (5), Northern Cape (3).Individual operators are limited to 16 licenses overall and to no more than two licenses per province. Each province oversee its own casino and other gaming license procedures. Each province is moving forward at its own pace. The status of the new gaming legislation in each province varies.Four provinces Gaugteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and Western Cape are proceeding faster than the others and are projected to award new casino licenses in 1997.Mpumalanga has awarded three of its four licenses through May, 1997, and Gaugteng is receiving bid submmission through mid-June, 1997.Tsogo Sun has been awarded two licenses and Global Resorts one license in Mpumalanga. The future status of Sun International South Africa's licenses remain uncertain.Of Sun International's current operations 7 are in the North West Province, 5 in the Eastern Cape, 2 in the Freestate and 1 in the Northern Province.By 1999 Sun International must give up some of its licenses and must start to compete against the new entrants, many of whom have secured sites much closer to the major metropolitan areas. Thus Sun International's status as a casino operator will most certainly change as new licenses are issued and casino ownership and distribution criteria go into effect in each province. We present information on 13 of Sun International `s 15 casinos currently operating as we go to press in June, 1997.Sun International's largest and most internationally known casino resort is its Sun City Resort in the North West Province. All international players traveling to South Africa are advised to please contact Sun International.
